How Messi's 100 European goals were scored

Barcelona's Lionel Messi has emulated Cristiano Ronaldo in reaching 100 goals in UEFA club competition; dissects the Argentinian marvel's body of work.

Lionel Messi has scored 100 goals in European competition in 122 games. After watching three matches from the bench, he made his competition debut in a 2-0 defeat at Shakhtar Donetsk on 7 December 2004 – aged 17.

How they were scored

Slow start
After four goalless outings – and nearly a year after his competition debut – Messi scored his first UEFA goal in a 5-0 thrashing of Panathinaikos on 2 November 2005. It remains the longest wait for a goal in his European career, though he has gone four games without scoring in three subsequent spells: October 2006–March 2007, March–September 2008 and February–April 2015.

Goal progression
1–20 – 42 games
21–40 – 21
41–60 – 18
61–80 – 23
81–100 – 18

Hat-trick king
Messi shares with Cristiano Ronaldo the European record for hat-tricks: seven in total, including one four-goal haul (v Arsenal, 6 April 2010) and five in a 7-0 triumph over Leverkusen (7 March 2012) – the latter tally a first for the UEFA Champions League (group stage to final). Last season he broke further new ground by hitting hat-tricks in successive appearancesagainst Celtic and Manchester City.

Peak periods
Those two trebles heralded a run of five straight games in which he claimed at least one UEFA Champions League goal – ten goals in all from September–December 2016. He had previously registered in a career-best five consecutive European matches from September 2013 to March 2014 (undeterred by missing several games through injury) and September to December 2014. His most prolific period was between November 2011 and March 2012, when he squeezed ten goals into just four matches.

High-water mark
Messi has been at his very best in the earliest stages of this competiton; his 60 in the group stage and 21 in the round of 16 are both tournament records. He bagged 14 goals in 11 games in his best UEFA Champions League campaign of 2011/12 – and managed an even more impressive rate in 2016/17 with 11 in nine outings.

It's been a few weeks since their release but the Adidas Pure Chaos were looking fit for a derby match and who other than  Zlatan Ibrahimović to rise to the occasion and wear them.

The hype took a shortfall after a lackadaisical first half from the big man himself.  It may have been a long night of FIFA 17, or who knows what other distractions may exist in the world of Ibrahimović. But The biggest change didn't come from the bench but from the locker rooms. Zlatan made  a boot switch from his Adidas Pure Chaos to the Nike Mercurial Vapor X, part of Nike's Radiant Reveal Pack.

Soon after he made the boot switch it was game on as soon as he put on his Vapors. In the 54th minute he dribbled the ball in the 18-yard box and gave a pass inside towards the penalty spot,  there  Juan Mata appeared and  came towards the ball, slotting it towards the far left post and into the back of the net. It would prove to be enough to put Manchester ahead and give them bragging rights until the next derby finish.

It was clear the big man was in full stride after switching from Nike to Adidas & back.

With the likes of Neymar Jr. and Leo Messi switching boots during the half I may just have to give it a try during my next match. 😜

I remember putting on my first pair of Copa's. The brand with three stripes, the kangaroo leather, the extra long laces that had to be wrapped around like spaghetti straps twice to get the comfortable-tight feel. The separate purchase of the tongue ties, leather cleaner and shoe bag.

I was just a kid who looked up to his brother and remember the words murmured from my father to him,  you're getting a pair once you've reached a competitive level.  What was that competitive level?  Who knows really. But was was definitely true was that Adidas Copa Mundial was the best cleat any kid could have and only the best kids on the field wore them.

Will Copa's survive to see another century with all the new technology today, color variations, and hype around the latest and greatest trendy shoes, we will just have to see. Share your thoughts below and let us know about your first pair of Copa's.
